History

The origins
of the Monte-Carlo Golf Club

It was the English colony of Monte Carlo that prompted the Société des Bains de Mer to undertake such an audacious project, at an altitude of 850 meters.

The club's revival after the Second World War

At the end of the Second World War, Maître Jean-Charles Rey relaunched the association alongside such great professionals as Henry Cotton, Max Faulkner and Robert Halsall. Despite limited means, and with the support of another Englishman, F. Stone, they even managed to organize a remarkable Professional Open from 1953 to 1957.

Course development and club structuring

Then, under the presidency of Prince Pierre Grimaldi, father of Prince Rainier III, a new stage was reached with the construction of two additional holes, the course initially comprising just 12.
In 1970, Maître Jean-Charles Rey took over the presidency of the Club, a position he held without interruption until 1994. Thanks to the support of the Monegasque State and the Société des Bains de Mer, the course was completely refurbished and equipped with an automatic watering system.

The Monte Carlo Professional Open and the great years of the European Tour

It was also under his presidency that the Monte Carlo Professional Open, a European Tour event, was reorganized for 9 years, from 1984 to 1993. This prestigious competition welcomed the world’s best players, including Payne Stewart, Curtis Strange, Calvin Peete, Lee Tevino, Ray Floyd, Severiano Ballesteros, José Maria Olazabal, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Sergio Garcia, Sandy Lyle, Sam Torrance, Nick Faldo, Ian Woosnam, Daren Clarke, Paul McGinley, Vijay Singh, Mark McNulty, Gary Player, Bernhard Langer, Isao Aoki, Costantino Rocca and Jean Van de Velde.

Major developments since 1995

Since 1995, under the presidency of Maître Henry Rey, three new holes have been created (17, 18 and 8), several others have been redeveloped (10, 3 and 6), three greens have been completely resurfaced, and the pro-shop and sheepfold have been rebuilt. The clubhouse lounges and changing rooms have also been renovated.

A presidency focused on modernity and continuity

Today, under the presidency of Michel Dotta, the ambition is to enhance the remarkable heritage handed down by his predecessors, harmoniously combining tradition and modernity.
